Wednesday, 02 October 2019

It was our great pleasure to have our Project Finance, PPP and Energy Projects Partner Mr. Nail Hassanov invited to deliver a presentation on renewable energy in Uzbekistan and the relevant Uzbek legislation on energy, project finance and foreign investment at the Frontier Markets event held by the international law firm CMS on September 23, 2019. Power generation companies, producers of renewable energy equipment and financial institutions got an opportunity to know more about the changing legal landscape in the energy sector of the Uzbekistan's economy, particularly with respect to renewable energy. PPP instruments and the regime for foreign investment in the sphere of renewable energy, as well as the recently adopted legislation for the sector, were of particular interest for foreign companies.

Being one of recognized experts in the field with solid experience of participation in relevant projects, including projects for the construction of solar power stations, as well as of the development of the relevant sector-specific legislation, Nail gave recommendations on how to initiate an energy-related PPP or investment project, to get incentives or subsidies from the state, to avoid most likely project risks. Moreover, as the recently adopted Law on Renewable Energy, the overview of which is available at, remains to be challenging for understanding and incomplete, a number of practical points related to the Law were clarified.

CMS is one of the largest law firms in the world. The firm currently has 4,500 legal and tax advisers across 74 offices. In 2017, CMS was ranked as the law firm with the most FTSE 100 clients, jointly with Slaughter and May.
